What Am I?

 Yes. What am I?

I know it sounds like a deep question... but blonde yourself up a bit and help me out.

My whole life, I have thought of myself as a blonde. I mean, yes, I have highlighted my hair since I was in the 6th grade... and my hair always seemed to have an ash-blonde dullness at the roots. But now that it's finally growing out, a certain someone keeps insisting that I'm a brunette.

So... what am I? A blonde? Brunette? Totally awesome? You decide!

Tease Me.

Lately, I've been having days where I love my pretty much maintenance-free hair. It's just so easy to not have to worry about it.

But then... I see this:

Ugh. And it makes me miss my ex-BFF's Ms. Hairspray, Mr. Teasing Comb, and Miss Blow Dryer. Oh, friends. How I truly miss you.

How about we make it just a little bit worse and "tease" me some more, shall we?

Teased, braided perfection.

Wavy perfection.

Elegant and effortless.

Um. Gorg.

Meh. Only 316 more days. They just can't go by fast enough.

Convertible.

This past week while on vacation in Palm Desert, my brother and I were greatly deprived and only had the option to drive around my dad's convertible. Aww shucks, right?

I quickly found that the only option for convertible hair was a convertible style in itself. The hairstyle I came up with was none other than the Boho bun. It is convertible because not only does it look chic and fun, but it also stays securely in place during long convertible rides. I added a couple flowers to the 'do and voila! It stayed perfectly in place. I also opted for this hairstyle the day my family and I went golfing. 

See... it's a convertible convertible hairstyle!

Scene Hair.

OK, I'll admit. I'm not 100% sure what these girls are thinking... but it sure is, um... interesting.

I personally think it's kind of cool, though it's not a look I would ever sport or let my future kids wear. No way Josè. But for these girls... obviously it fits them pretty well. Also... I see two common trends when searching for scene hair. 1) Duck face. 2) Thirteen-year-olds. Yet another reason I will not be opting for this 'do.

Blonde at the Tips.

Clearly, as you may have noticed in my posts, I am not a hairstylist. Nor am I a professional writer. Nor am I very cool.

But I do really like to write. And I like to play, experiment, make fun of myself, and try all sorts of new things. As my hair is beginning to grow, you may be noticing my ever-evolving roots.

They're sort of out of control. Just a little bit. In addition to my blonde "tips", I would like to point out something else.

Since I'm rather new at this whole hair-blogging thing, I clearly am not good at taking step-by-step photos nor at describing the way I style my hair properly. Also, I know I don't sound super-smart all the time (but I am, I promise!). Thus, the "blonde" tips. I truly apologize if I ever confuse you. Well, I hope you're able to enjoy/tolerate my blonde blondness. For the next 321 days anyway.  :)

Formal.

With so many photos to share today... I don't need to do too much writing! Today I have decided to show you my step-by-step process to create a formal hairdo without a formal styling process. You know, since I can't use any hairspray, products, heat or tease my hair at all... I've got to make do with the basics. And you know what? Surprisingly the basics did the trick (this time).

I hope you enjoy the following photo montage of my before-to-formal look:

Put in Wrap Snap & Go curlers the night before and sleep
 on them to give your hair some good body the next day.

Take out curlers... and behold: Shirley Temple.

Adorb? Not so much.

Shake your head up, down, and all around to loosen
the curls and separate them a little bit.

I prefer to "shake" my head to separate and fluff the curls,
instead of brushing my hair because then it doesn't make
them too fluffy and still keeps the curl in place.

Whoops!!! During the formal event setup, I wrapped my curls
 in my scarf because I didn't want to sweat too much
 (we had to put 300 chair covers on!) and relax the curls all the way!
Oh, and P.S. ... that's Zoë from From A to Zoë.

Event time! You just know I rocked the Aunie Hawk
 for the event. Boo yah.

The Aunie Hawk delivered volume, oomph, and surprisingly
 didn't fall out at all. I skipped the bun with the longer hair
underneath and just let the whole back hang loose.

So, as you see... frumpy to formal can be done without products, processing and poofy hair (though I would've killed for some hairspray at one point in the evening)!!!  Do you think you're willing to give the Aunie Hawk a go yet? Or is it still to much of a mullet-look, as my sister says?

The Bee Behind The Hive.

Well, hey there! I think it's about time I introduced myself, don't you?

This is me:

I'm a 20-something girl who is always on the move. I earned my degree in Health Education & Promotion from Boise State University, I work for St. Luke's hospital in Boise, and I'm always finding new ways to adapt to every change that is thrown in my direction. When people ask me where I want to be in 5 years, my response is "happy." I constantly have to go, go, go to keep my mind occupied and keep myself stress-free. I am always really perky and peppy. Everyone thinks I drink a lot of coffee, but I'm really just a bright spirit at heart.

Here are a few of my favorite things:

• Teased hair and hairspray (obviously!)
• Fuzzy puppies, especially long-haired chihuahuas
• Scrabble
• Hawai'i (Kauai pictured above)
• Ice cream
• Massages (...speaking of which... ahem...)
• Margaritas, especially my dad's recipe, though they are quite stout
• Family dinners (we always have the most inappropriate conversations)
• Sunny, 78 degree, no wind days
• Lovey butterflies (you know, that feeling you get when you're so in the moment)

There are so many more things that I can just go on and on about, but I won't bore you with too much about myself. I mean, I'd like to think I'm pretty cool... but not that cool.

So, yeah. That's me. Annelise. Whoopee...

When in Doubt.

... Messy bun it out!

I am SUCH a huge fan of the messy bun. Why? Because you can do it any way that you want to. Mine usually finds itself perched at the nape of my neck or right on top of my head. I usually twist it in and out of the ponytail holder a couple of times and it ends up where it ends up. Simple!

That is why I love it. My sister always asks me how I do my messy buns. The thing is... they're just so easy because I don't even know what I do. I pull, twist, twist, wrap. Done. I might have to post a step-by-step eventually... but I'm sure you probably have your messy bun down like whoa.

How do you do yours? Any tips for me with mine? Any new ways I could learn?

French Braid a la Bun.

Welcome, welcome hair chefs (if that's what you would call them)! Today we have a recipe for a quick and easy French braid a la Bun!

There are a couple ingredients that go into this French braid recipe:

1. A single French braid going down the back of your head.
2. A hairband to create a messy bun at the bottom of the braid.
3. Bobby pins if you have short pieces that you want to keep held back.

This recipe takes approximately 2-3 minutes to prepare and is ready to wear all day long! Enjoy!

Month 1.

I thought it would be pretty cool to give month-by-month updates of my hair growth progress. Currently, I had just arranged to update you every three months when I get my quarterly trim... but every month is just so much cooler, right?

Guess what?  I've been doing Bye Bye Beehive now for ONE WHOLE MONTH! I made it!!!

Phew- only 334 days left. OK, now I'm actually a little nervous. That's a heck-of-a-long time.

Halo Braid.

I just can't get enough of my sister. She was only in town this weekend for two days and it wasn't enough. And it really wasn't fair, either. Seriously, all I did for those two days was look at her hair. And look. And get jealous. And then I would look at it again. Alas... sigh. Maybe, someday. 

So, I may have wasted my time while she was in town, but she used those two days wisely to show me two new hairstyles. One was yesterday's sock bun style, and one was today's Halo Braid. It's really just a continuous French braid, but she decided that it needed a catchy name... thus, Halo Braid was born.

To be quite honest, I'm not too sure if she named it after the style of the hair, or the fact that she played hours of Halo with my brother this weekend. Clearly, we have a Halo theme up in herrrr. 

See how it sort of looks like a continuous French braid? Cool, right?

Really, all you do is French braid your hair in two simple braids. Then, tuck your ends under, up and inside the opposite side's braid and pin it to secure it in place. Does that make sense?

You know how when you French braid your hair and if you stick your finger up through the back of the braid there is kind of a hole that you can make? All you need to do is just stick the other side's braid tail up that hole and pin it.

This definitely works better for girls with medium length hair, like mine. My sister's is way too long to get the ends all the way up in there.

Another cool part about this style is that if you do it on clean hair, you can rock it all day, sleep on it, and take it out the next day for voluptuous crimped waves. It's 2 styles in one!

Seriously, sister. You need to come back to Boise more often!! Please?

Sock Bun: The Style.

If you saw my post about the sock bun, you may remember that I made fun of the way I looked with it in. Because in fact, it was pretty funny looking. 

This past weekend, my sister was in town. You know my sister, right? I posted about her last week. She's my inspiration for this whole thing. So, when she suggested I try a bun on the top of my head with the front pieces pulled out into a faux bump, I just couldn't resist her suggestion. Except, there was one problem; she wanted me to twirl my hair up into a ballerina bun, and my hair isn't quite long enough for that. So-- what did I think of? Sock bun, of course!

I put my hair into a high ponytail, wrapped a white sock donut around it, and rolled my hair over the sock like normal. I added about 3 bobby pins to keep my shorter hairs in place.

OOps! I see a little bit of white sock donut!!

You guys, THIS STYLE STAYED ALL DAY. I used no hairspray (duh), and even was walking to and from the movies and battling gusts of wind. It didn't even budge. I love love love this look for a quick hairstyle or if you need to get your 2nd-day hair out of your face.

Also, look at the sweet colors that this style shows off! If you have lighter hair on top and darker hair on bottom, or even just highlights, this style really brings out each and every color. It's just awesome! I mean, take a look at the bun shot below:
